Backlight failures are a common reason a TCL TV can have sound, respond to the remote, and still appear to have a completely black screen. The flashlight test is the quickest way to determine whether the LCD is still making an image.
Perform the Flashlight Test
Turn the TV on in a dark room. Shine a bright flashlight across the screen at an angle while a menu or video should be visible. A faint image strongly suggests the LCD and video path are working and the backlight is not.
Common LED Strip Symptoms
Other clues include a screen that flashes bright for a second, one dark section of the screen, flickering, or a picture that becomes unusually dim before failing.
LED Strips vs. Driver Circuit
The LED strips themselves can fail, but the driver section of the power supply can also stop delivering the required output. Testing LED strings with appropriate equipment helps avoid replacing the wrong part.
Why One Failed LED Can Shut Down the Set
Many backlight drivers monitor current and voltage. An open or abnormal LED string can cause the protection circuit to disable the output.
