Determine Whether the Image or the Light Is Missing
Look closely at the dark side of the screen. If the picture is still visible but simply much dimmer, the backlight system becomes a strong suspect. If the image itself is distorted or missing, investigate the signal path and panel as well.
Try the Flashlight Test
In a dark room, shine a flashlight across the darker area while the TV is on. If the image becomes visible under the flashlight, the LCD is still producing video and the missing illumination points toward backlights or their driver circuitry.
Backlight & Flashlight Test Guide
LED Strip Failure Can Affect Only Part of the Screen
Edge-lit and direct-lit TVs use different LED arrangements. A failed strip or section can leave one side, one band, or one region noticeably darker than the rest.
Power Supply or LED Driver Problems
Some TVs divide the backlight into multiple circuits. A driver fault or connector problem can prevent one section from receiving proper current even when the other section lights normally.
Panel and Diffuser Problems Can Look Similar
Uneven diffuser sheets, physical damage, pressure marks, or panel defects can also create uneven brightness. If the dark area changes with picture content rather than remaining fixed, document that behavior before ordering parts.
Backlight Repair Requires Care
Replacing LED strips usually requires removing the LCD panel and diffuser layers. Large panels are extremely thin and easy to crack, so this repair should only be attempted if you are comfortable handling the display safely.
Before Ordering Parts
Match the correct LED strip set, power board, or driver board using the complete TV model and the original component numbers. Similar-looking strips can use different voltages, lengths, or connector layouts.
